The 2009 Long Beach Schiller Colloquium

Jeffrey High and the Romance, German, Russian Languages & Literatures Department presented a stellar 3 day Colloquium on the life and works of Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) —One of Germany’s first historians. The 2009 Long Beach Schiller Colloquium on the occasion of his 250th birthday took place on the CSULB campus September 10-12 and promoted debate on the many flash-points and canonical reception shifts in the cyclically polarized reception of Schiller and his works. Specifically, papers addressed reception problems from Schiller’s time to the present in pursuit of historical and contemporary answers to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s prophetic expression of frightened admiration in 1794: “Who is this Schiller?”--Who has he been?--and Who is this Schiller now? for event photos click here
